Oculus Go Uploaded New Build but Not Getting Update I9n Device
Today I decided to take my Oculus Get out of its box over again afterward a lot of fourth dimension of inactivity. You may wonder why I'm non using it that much and the respond is that currently I'm mostly experimenting with my Vive Focus, then I've left its little brother Oculus Become resting in its original box for a lot of time.
If you are in my same situation, in that location are two problems that volition haunt you:
- As soon as you'll take your Oculus Go out of the box where information technology has been enclosed for weeks, your room volition exist filled by a terrible smell of used leather shoes. Really, information technology is similar a toxic bomb. So, open up it in an open up space, or wear a gas mask;
- The headset has a non-up-to-date runtime and then you have to update information technology to its latest version if you lot want to feel the latest features offered past Oculus. I'thou updating mine, for example, to have Casting (the streaming to phone capability announced at OC5).
Regarding the point one, I can't aid yous that much, just for point 2… I'g here to the rescue with this little and simple mail service! And since I want to be useful for everyone, I'll also guide you on how to update your Vive Focus.
Go on on reading, also because it is very interesting that these two headsets take a completely different approach regarding Software Updates.
Oculus Become
And so, how to update your Oculus Go operating system? Well, basically… you can't practice (almost) anything to update it. When you try cycling all the OS options to notice how to update it, this is the reply that your Oculus Go will give you lot:
Oculus Become will decide itself when information technology will update and you can't practice anything to update information technology manually. There's no "cheque for update" option. This is considering Oculus wants to give a smooth feel to the user: the user is never bellyaching regarding new updates, simply the headset updates automatically when it detects that it is connected to a Wi-Fi, and it is in accuse and/or information technology is not used (I recollect you that Oculus recommends not using the headset while in charge). This ways that you volition never encounter update processes: you use your headset, then you put in in accuse and so next time you volition turn information technology on, it will be magically upwardly-to-appointment. This is for sure a smart choice: the user experience is very smooth because the user should never take care of the updates, all happens automatically when the headset is not in use. Just it is a pain in the a** for people like me that take to install all the latest updates and want to exercise it as fast as they tin.
And so, what have I done? I followed these basic steps:
- I've connected by Oculus Become to a Wi-Fi network (connected to the Internet);
- I've attached information technology to my power plug through a USB charger;
- I've put my headset on the desk (letting it get in standby), and started praying Saint Zuck from Palo Alto to let it download the latest updates;
Saint Zuck. He can too make the miracle of transforming your Go in a 6DOF headset (Epitome by Tweaknology) - Afterwards diverse minutes, I put my headset on and I restarted it;
- Later the reboot, I checked the operating system version, to come across if information technology was the latest 1 (you lot do that by selecting Settings -> Evidence all -> Info). If not, I restarted the process from step iii.
Current version of the software installed on my Get
As in all Android operating systems, footstep 4 (the reboot) was fundamental to allow the headset install the updates it had downloaded.
After diverse iterations of this process (at least v), that made the headset install all the various incremental updates, I finally managed to have Casting on my Go!
It is very weird that the user has absolutely no role in this process: you can't trigger the updates, yous can't verify the download status and then on. It is true that the update-when-non-in-utilise process is very smart, just at the same time, I remember they should have provided besides i manual choice to update the device.
Vive Focus
The HTC Vive Focus has a more traditional arroyo regarding updates. The user manages them, as in all Android devices.
When you turn your device on, the headset volition warn you regarding new updates with a black popup and you tin can make up one's mind if downloading the update and after on install it.

If you lot want, you can also trigger the update process. You but have to:
- Select Settings in the Home menu;
- Select System Update in the Settings window;
- In the resulting window, select "Check for Update". The headset will look for updates. Notice that if the headset has already found an update in a previous search, it will skip this step and will directly go to step 4;
- If at that place is a new system update, a blackness popup volition show what are its characteristics. Click Ok in this popular-upwardly;
- Click Download in the resulting Window;
- The download tin also take various minutes. When it has finished, it will ask you lot if you want to install the update and reboot your device. To install the update you will be required to take at least 35% of battery charge (or the system won't update your device) and during the update process you lot won't be able to use your headset.
If you prefer a ready of video instructions, here you lot are:
It's slap-up having the possibility to trigger my updates manually, for me it is important, but it is likewise a nuisance that these updates take then much to download (today's one was like 500MB). This means that during the download time the headset won't have optimal performances… and after that, I will also have to wait for the update to happen earlier beingness able to utilize my headset over again.
I've establish very interesting that these devices take a so different arroyo regarding updates. Basically, it reflects the dissimilar attitudes of the 2 companies: Oculus is offering a very close production, over which you take so little command, but with a great user experience. HTC offers something that is a fleck less "cool", but where the user has more than control to practise what he/she wants. There are pros and cons in every solution.
I hope you accept liked this post and if it is the example, pray for Saint Zuck with me…
